Focus is, in essence, our attention. It is where we direct our conscious awareness. I can't see how it can't be a foundation principle of life, not least because we get what we imagine and act towards in life. If we cannot focus our attention on those things that we want or need then we tend to end up getting those things that we end up focusing our attention on.
There are multiple things that can draw our focus and our attention. Because attention has become the greatest commodity to trade in and everyone wants yours. The question is, to what degree do they have your best interests at heart?
